£25m stadium for Scunthorpe United gets green light

The planning application for the new £25m Scunthorpe United stadium has been signed off today.

Work is due start this May with the Club potentially moving out of Glanford Park for the start of the 2017/18 season.

The stadium, which will seat 12,000 fans, will be built on the outskirts of Scunthorpe as part of the ambitious £1.2bn Lincolnshire Lakes development, which includes 6,000 new homes.

Peter Swann, United Chairman, said: “We are at the beginning of a hugely exciting period for Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire, one which will help to define the area and provide some of the finest football and sports facilities in the country.”

Coun Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Today signifies a major milestone and means we can now move forward with plans to build this fantastic venue for football fans.”

It comes after it emerged York City Council needs to borrow another £5m to allow a stalled plan to build a new stadium for two of the city’s sports clubs to finally get underway after more than a decade in the planning.
