The branches, along with 149 others, will be “wound down” over the coming weeks, according to administrator Duff & Phelps.

The process will see stores closed or transferred when they have either run out of stock or have found a buyer.

Buyers, likely to be rival retailers, will target groups of stores or individual shops in prime locations.

The BHS brand name still remains up for sale. When retailer Woolworths went bust in 2008, its name was bought by retailer Shop Direct and was resurrected as an online store before being merged into online brand Very last year.

Retail consultancy Hilco has been appointed to help wind down the BHS store network. It will place key managers in outlets to help close shops, or transfer them to new owners.

Firms who the administrator was not convinced could run the whole of BHS include a company led by retailer Greg Tufnell, reportedly backed by Portuguese investors, and a consortium led by Matalan founder John Hargreaves. There were also separate offers from Sports Direct’s Mike Ashley and Poundstretcher boss Aziz Tayub. But those close to the sale process expect these firms to be active buyers of the BHS estate.

Later this month the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Committee and the Work and Pensions Committee will grill key BHS executives and retail billionaire Sir Philip Green, who sold the chain for £1 to a consortium called Retail Acquisitions last April.

The collapse of BHS could lead to the loss of 8,000 members of staff, and 3,000 jobs of non-BHS employees who work in the stores. Although some of these workers may be transferred over to new owners.
