Mothercare said it was well placed for the Christmas trading period today after international and online growth helped profits to almost double.
The mother and baby specialist also announced plans for another 10 stores in China as its international business delivered "a particularly strong performance".

In the UK, new ranges such as the babywear clothing line Baby K, launched by celebrity Myleene Klass, proved popular with customers, the company said.

Mothercare, which acquired the Early Learning Centre last year, posted underlying profits before tax of £9.5m for the 28 weeks to October 11, up 94 per cent on the same period last year.

Many retailers are struggling as consumers cut back on spending or turn to discounters amid rising unemployment and falling house prices as the country enters recession.

However Mothercare said that although the second half would be tough, it would still be able to deliver growth as it changes store capacity, combines and closes some stores and continues its expansion in the Middle East and Asia.
