Nearly a third of Britons are failing to set aside time to ensure they are making the most of their finances, a survey showed today.

Around 30 per cent of people admitted they were not organised when it came to their financial affairs, but only 3 per cent of people said if they had more time they would use it to get their money in order, according to insurer Friends Provident.

Two-thirds of people said they were planning to tighten their belts this year in the face of rising costs, but only 33 per cent said they planned to set aside more time to overhaul their finances.

In fact, 83 per cent of the 1,000 people questioned claimed time was more precious to them than money.

Peter Timberlake, head of public relations at Friends Provident, said: "Talk of recession, the ongoing impact of the credit crunch and rising prices for both fuel and food are all contributing to financial uncertainty for many people.

"However, a little bit of time spent checking their finances could help them overcome these concerns."
