What a waste
Most Britons throw away damaged household electrical items without any attempt to repair them first, a survey found.
Despite pressure to reduce electronics landfills, 86 per cent of people immediately discard broken household items and 46 per cent would replace a stereo, MP3 or DVD player simply because it had stopped working.
Another 12 per cent would replace an electrical item just because the fuse had blown, according to the poll for insurer Legal & General.
The survey of 4,000 adults found 44 per cent would not try to fix a broken washing machine or dishwasher, 23 per cent would throw away a computer which was slow or kept crashing, and 18 per cent would discard a kettle coated in limescale.
Those aged between 25 and 34 were most likely to throw away broken household items.
