SUSSEX regained the initiative after an interesting second day's play in the County Championship match against Yorkshire at Scarborough.
After Sussex resumed on 203-4 in their first innings following a rain-affected first day, Yorkshire hit back in rousing fashion to claim the last six wickets for 38 runs in 13 overs, Adil Rashid doing the bulk of the damage on his way to 4-56 from 19
overs.
Andy Hodd lifted his overnight 66 to 81 before he fell lbw to the leg-spinner, who had Robin Martin-Jenkins superbly caught at slip by Jacques Rudolph from the very next ball. There were also two wickets for Rana Naved-ul-Hasan agai nst his former club.
Yorkshire lost regular wickets in reply, Jacques Rudolph top-scoring with 41 as they closed on 133-7, 132 behind, as Sussex wrested back the initiative in the final session.
Rain, however, is forecast over the next two days.
Michael Vaughan's miserable run with the bat continued. He survived two early chances to reach 19 not out at lunch but perished on the same score when he edged Jason Lewry behind to leave Yorkshire 27-2.
Rain then caused a delay with Yorkshire 35-2 in 14 overs in reply to Sussex's 268 all out.
Former England captain Vaughan was dropped on four at third slip by Michael Yardy off Mohammad Sami, the fielder failing to cling on to a fairly straightforward chance high to his left.
Vaughan edged the next delivery just in front of Chris Adams at second slip but also showed flashes of his class, one off-driven four off Sami to the Peasholm Park end drawing loud approval from the North Marine Road crowd.
Anthony McGrath, who is leading Yorkshire in the absence of captain Darren Gough, was unbeaten on four at the break after Yorkshire lost the early wicket of Andrew Gale, who was lbw to Jason Lewry for three in the third over.
At lunch, Yorkshire are 27-1 in reply to Sussex's first innings 265 but then lost wickets at regular intervals.
Yorkshire had earlier bowled out Sussex for 268. The visitors collapsed from 227-4 in their first innings as leg-spinner Adil Rashid finished with four wickets and pace bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan two wickets.
Sussex lost their last six wickets for 38 runs in 13 overs, Rana wrapping things up when he bowled Jason Lewry.
The ninth wicket had more than a hint of good fortune about it. Corey Collymore, looking to hit Rashid through the leg-side, was run out when he got a leading edge, the ball striking Adam Lyth on the knee at silly mid-off before rebounding on to the stumps.
Rashid finished with 4-56 from 19 overs and Rana 2-55 from 16.1 overs.
Rashid had claimed three of the victims to fall, having Andy Hodd lbw for 81, Robin Martin-Jenkins caught at first slip by Jacques Rudolph from his first delivery, and Mohammad Sami lbw for nine.
Rana Naved-ul-Hasan captured the other wicket when he had Carl Hopkinson lbw for 15.
But the match may yet come down to a battle for bonus points with poor weather forecast for the last two days.
