YORKSHIRE'S hopes of finishing with a victory faded as they had to settle for a draw at Sussex - but with Kent's defeat at Durham, Yorkshire have survived the threat of relegation.
Sussex declared on 397-9 at the end of the fourth and final day, with Adil Rashid taking 7-136.
Yorkshire's survival was confirmed this morning as they concluded their match against Sussex at Hove, with Kent's defeat against Durham at Canterbury also guaranteeing Sussex's safety.
Durham have won the County Championship for the first time.
The visitors captured ony two wickets during the afternoon session which Sussex began on 248-6 - effectively 55-6 - after both teams earlier confirmed their First Division survival.
Rashid picked up his sixth wicket of the innings when he had Murray Goodwin caught at slip by Jacques Rudolph for 118, the ball appearing to come off the back of the bat as the Zimbabwean tried to sweep, and David Wainwright had Ollie Rayner caught behind just before the interval following a gritty innings of 22.
Goodwin was the star of the show as he achieved his sixth Championship hundred of the season, his innings comprising 183 balls and including 12 fours.
All four wickets during the morning went to Rashid, who struck the first blow when Michael Yardy was superbly caught one-handed at short-leg by Andrew Gale for 60.
Sussex then slipped to 177-4 when Rashid had Matt Prior caught at point by Adam Lyth off a sliced drive.
Chris Adams, in his final innings as Sussex captain, dished out some punishment to the leg-spinner when he twice launched him for leg-side sixes, Adams also striking a straight six off David Wainwright into the Cromwell Road end.
But Rashid had his revenge when he tempted Adams into an ugly drive which he could only loft to Steve Patterson running in from mid-off, Adams departing for 35 and to a standing ovation.
Right on the stroke of lunch, Rashid picked up his fifth wicket of the innings to go with his first innings century when he had Luke Wright lbw for seven.
