YORKSHIRE seam bowler Steven Patterson took two Sussex wickets in the LV County Championship Division One match at Scarborough before rain set in for the day shortly before tea with the visitors on 203-4.
Andy Hodd (66) and Carl Hopkinson (1) are the undefeated batsmen after an inclement day at North Marine Road.

The home team, led by Anthony McGrath in the absence through injury of Darren Gough, struggled for penetration on a sunny morning at Nort
h Marine Road in front of a crowd of around 1,500 spectators.

Patterson, brought into the side in place of Gough, claimed the only wicket to fall before lunch when he had Michael Yardy caught behind for 26 to leave Sussex 49-1 in the 14th over.

Otherwise, bat dominated ball before lunch as Chris Nash (57*) and Hodd (20*) added an unbroken 57 for the second wicket, Nash reaching his 50 from 69 balls with 13 fours.

After Sussex resumed after lunch on 106-1, Nash fell for 78 when he clipped a ball from Matthew Hoggard to Michael Vaughan at short mid-wicket.

Patterson then bowled Murray Goodwin for 25 before leg-spinner Adil Rashid had Chris Adams caught at slip for two.

They could be the only wickets Patterson takes in the match because Tim Bresnan was released by England at Cardiff mid-afternoon and immediately travelled to replace him on Thursday.

Earlier in the season, a similar situation arose when Hoggard joined the Championship game against Durham at Chester-le-Street on day two in place of Ben Sanderson.
