YORKSHIRE have unveiled a new artist's impression of their proposed £20m pavilion at Headingley Carnegie cricket ground.
The crystalline structure, topped with a green, undulating roof, will serve as an iconic headquarters for Yorkshire cricket and also as a teaching facility for Leeds Met University, who are funding the majority of the project.
Yorkshire yesterday staged an exhibition at Headingley to give local residents the chance to view detailed impressions of The Carnegie Pavilion and also to provide feedback ahead of the club submitting a planning application to Leeds City Council.
Around 50 residents attended an event described by Yorkshire's chief executive Stewart Regan as "extremely positive".
"We tried to address concerns surrounding things like transport, parking and sustainability and what the overall proposal will do for Headingley as a suburb," said Regan.
"One or two people expressed concerns, but the general reaction was very encouraging.
"The pavilion will help secure Headingley's future as an international ground and the next step is to submit our proposals to the Yorkshire members at our annual meeting on March 15.
"After that we hope to submit our planning application to the council towards the end of this month."
The new pavilion, designed by architects SMC Alsop, will replace the old Wintershed and will feature new dressing rooms, hospitality suites and a media centre.
Yorkshire hope to pull down the Wintershed prior to the Headingley Test against South Africa in July and will then erect a temporary stand.
The club want to start building work at the end of the season and hope that the project – originally earmarked for completion ahead of next year's Ashes Test – will be finished in 2010.
"Our ambition was for a pavilion that is striking and which will be recognised the world over," added Regan. "We hope that people will approve of the new design."
