THEY say that lightning never strikes twice, but try telling that to Yorkshire.

Less than 24 hours after South African pace bowler Morne Morkel had to cut short his stay due to a hamstring tear, fellow seamer Ajmal Shahzad has gone down with the same injury and faces a three-to-six week lay-off.

It leaves Yorkshire's bowling
resources thin on the ground for tomorrow's Friends Provident Trophy match against Lancashire at Old Trafford, with Matthew Hoggard and Adil Rashid also unavailable due to their commitments with England Lions.

Ben Sanderson, the 19-year-old seam bowler, has been drafted into a 13-man squad which also includes Craig White and Joe Sayers.

Yorkshire's problems have been compounded by the news opening batsman Chris Taylor has gone down with a calf problem, having only just recovered from a hamstring injury himself.

Taylor was expected to slot into the side in place of England captain Michael Vaughan and is awaiting the outcome of an ultrasound scan.

Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire's director of professional cricket, said: "The injuries are going to test the strength of the squad, but I'm confident we've got the players to cope.

"Ajmal's injury is similar to Morne Morkel's. He pulled out of the second team game on Wednesday complaining of a tight hamstring and a scan has revealed he's picked up a tear.

"But it gives an opportunity to Ben Sanderson to come into the squad and he has been doing really well in the second team. If he gets a chance, it will be interesting to see how he copes."

Yorkshire have won two of their opening three games in the North Division and victory at Old Trafford (noon start) would see them plonk one foot in the quarter-finals.

"We've got five games left in the division and need to win at least three of them," added Moxon. "If we can beat Lancashire that would be a big stride towards the quarter-finals, but there is still a lot of work to do.

"I'm pleased with the start we've made to the season overall. We've competed in both the County Championship and Friends Provident Trophy and couldn't have asked for too much more."

Yorkshire squad v Lancashire: Gale, Brophy, McGrath, Rudolph, Lyth, White, Bresnan, Pyrah, Gough (capt), Kruis, Wainwright, Sayers, Sanderson.
