A turning point

THE passing of 40 years since the tumultuous events of 1968 – the year of protest – has prompted a great deal of reflection on how society has changed since and, in particular, what has happened to the culture where people stood up for their beliefs.
Expressing outrage on the streets may not be commonplace today,
but Barbara Gill's blockade of the Morrison's depot at Flaxby shows
that some people are still willing to defend their rights when backed into a corner.
Protests should respect the law and the rights of others but it would be a bleak day for democracy if individuals were stopped from making their voices heard.
Having attracted the attention of Morrison's and CE Electric to the plight of their pub, the Tiger Inn, it appears a compromise has now been reached. On too many occasions, major firms have been allowed to ride roughshod over the wishes of local communities. Hopefully, this protest will mark a turning point.
