NEARLY 20 years after he was handbagged by Margaret Thatcher outside the British Embassy in Paris, John Sergeant has decided he is not going to be shoved around by another matriarch.
He did the right thing by quitting Strictly Come Dancing and escaping the barbs of Arlene Phillips. Despite his flaws on the dancefloor, Sergeant was kept in the show by a surge of public support which risked making him the shock winner of the competition. As he recognised, this would have been a "joke too far".
Instead, Sergeant will be fondly remembered for his good-humoured performances with his Russian partner, Kristina Rihanoff, which made for an unlikely epitaph to a career as one of British television's best-known political journalists but earned him desperately few points from Strictly's unforgiving judges.
In deciding to bow out this Saturday, Sergeant has followed the advice of another departing prime minister, John Major, who said: "When the curtain falls, it's time to get off the stage."
