Stuart Broad is facing a fitness test in Rajkot tomorrow to determine whether he can boost England's selection plans for the opening one-day international against India.
The 22-year-old Nottinghamshire seamer was rested for yesterday's humiliating defeat against a Mumbai XI after reporting a sore right knee following the tourists' opening warm-up match on Sunday.

He has since been given an injection and is set to
be put through his paces in tomorrow's net session to determine whether he is fit enough to be considered for the opener to the seven-match one-day series at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground.

Broad's fitness will be a matter of some concern to England, already without left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom, who is yet to bowl at full capacity after arriving in India with a troublesome right Achilles sustained during the Stanford Series in Antigua.

Should Broad fail his fitness test, England will almost certainly field Graeme Swann and Samit Patel in a twin spin attack, although they remain hopeful he will recover in time to claim a place.

Recalling the circumstances of the injury, coach Peter Moores told Sky Sports News: "He landed awkwardly near the boundary.

"It seems to have settled down, but we will not know if he is fit for the first ODI until he comes through practice."

Lancashire seamer James Anderson appears to have done enough in the opening two warm-up matches to earn a recall after missing out for the big Stanford showdown.

Despite the spin-friendly conditions, however, England may consider sticking to the formula that secured a 4-0 series win over South Africa at the end of last summer if Broad is passed fit, with only one spinner supplementing four specialist seamers.

Moores is also delighted to have former captain Michael Vaughan beginning his bid to return to the Test team by joining the England Performance Squad, also set to tour India later this month.

It was confirmed yesterday Vaughan would be added to the EPP squad, having been left out of the main Test party for two matches against India following the ODI series.

Moores said: "Someone of Michael Vaughan's experience trying to get back in the team creates the competitive environment we need, with everybody pushing very hard."
