ROVERS striker Darren Byfield insists he has nothing to prove to Bristol City boss Gary Johnson.

Byfield finished last season as City's leading goalscorer yet was still released by Johnson after the club's defeat in the Championshi
p play-off final.

Today, he could make his first start for Rovers since recovering from a hernia operation because striker Gareth Taylor has been ruled out for three weeks with a hamstring tear.

"I'm certainly not bitter about the fact that the manager didn't offer me a new deal," he said. "These things happen and managers are paid to do what he feels is best for the club.

"I don't feel that I have got anything to prove to Gary Johnson or anyone else down there but I'll be happy if we come back here with a good result because Ashton Gate is a difficult place to go."

Although City lost only three times at home last season, they have yet to win in three games at home this time around.

Paul Heffernan, another City old boy, is competing with Byfield for a place in the side.

Manager Sean O'Driscoll said: "We've just played two difficult games – against Birmingham and Charlton – but I think this could be the toughest of the lot."

O'Driscoll has made it clear that he will not stand in the way should assistant Richard O'Kelly be offered the manager's job at his former club Grimsby Town. The Mariners have received over 50 applications for the post vacated this week by Alan Buckley.
