CRAVEN Council leader Carl Liss looks as if he might lose his
position following yesterday's election results.
The council was split between an alliance of Lib Dems and Independents, with the Conservatives as the largest group with 14 members. But a Tory gain in Skipton East, where Pamela Heseltine beat the Lib Dems' Eric Jaquin, means Conservative leader Christopher Anthony Knowles-Fitton may take over from Coun Liss.
Coun Liss (Ind) said: "That is the way it is looking at the moment – that the Conservatives will form the next administration. I have enjoyed my time as leader of Craven.''
He added that this time the Labour Party had entered a candidate (Chris Rose) in Skipton East and this had split the votes.
Had the Tories won a second seat it would have been a significant triumph for them.
Before the election the council's complexion was 10 Independents – one of whom, Ken Hart, supported the Tories, six Lib Dems and 14 Conservatives. Now there will be 15 Conservatives, 10 Independents and five Lib Dems.
