Calderdale

Todmorden, a bastion of Lib Dem power for more than 30 years, has finally elected a Tory councillor – for the first time since 1975.
Ian Cooper, a retired former managing director, beat his Lib Dem opponent Hilary Myers by more than 100 votes.

And despite former Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife, Cherie Booth, wishing her stepmother ''good luck'', Labour candidate Steph Booth was only able to manage a respectable third place.

But the Lib Dems were able to enjoy inflicting a rare defeat on Labour's Mohammed Najib, one of Calderdale's legendary political figures, in a bitter battle for Park ward after Mohammed Ilyas won a
tight contest.

Labour also lost in Illingworth and Mixenden to the BNP's Tom Bates, meaning that they now are reduced to nine seats on Calderdale Council.

The Conservatives lost no time in re-electing Ann McAllister as leader just hours after she regained her seat in Rastrick.
