Pupil beats illness with eight GCSEs

A Leeds Girls High School pupil scooped eight GCSEs with A* and A grades in spite of being struck down with a rare debilitating illness just before the exams.

Alice Boardman, 16, from Adel, Leeds, who was congratulated by her mother Katherine Manley, said she was "really happy". She became sick in February with Lemierre's Syndrome which begins as an infection in the throat and results in the inflammation of the jugular vein, leading to septicaemia. She spent two weeks in intensive care.
