GREAT Britain's Olympic rowers are not the only team celebrating success this summer as a group of schoolgirls from York proved they can be a success both on and off the water.

St Peter's School in York 's under-16 rowing eight won a bronze medal at the Women's Henley Regatta this summer as they were preparing for GCSEs.

Now the team has celebrated success on results day as well with 54 A*s and another 32 A grades betwee
n them.

The school's director of rowing and former Olympian Jamie MacLeod said: "Their performance at Henley was a first for any eight from St Peter's and drew the attention of the Regatta to girls rowing in the North.

"This shows top academic and top class sporting performance can go hand in hand and is really excellent news for all of them."

The team comprising Gussie Aiken, from Rothbury, Mr MacLeod's daughter Ellie from Clifton, York, Vikie Bew from York , cox Kirstie Robertson from Shrivenham, Maddie Hall from Malton, Livi Herrenschmidt from Nigeria, Jess Elkington from Dorrington, Alex Langford from Boston Spa and Lydia Hawthorn from Darlington all collected their results yesterday.

Ellie ,who picked up four A*s and six As yesterday, said: "We had to plan our training carefully around the exams. We did three sessions a week which were all one-and-a-half hours each and would sometimes start at 6.30am to keep ourselves clear for exams.

"I think pushing yourself physically helps you to be able to push yourself mentally and I felt more confidence going into the exams because of the rowing."
