SOME of Britain's biggest firms rely on Leeds-based Masternaut Three X to ensure their fleets of vehicles are driven safely and efficiently. The company is also regarded as one of the best places to work in Britain.
Masternaut Three X – which scooped the Excellence in Business Award for companies with turnover of between £10m and £50m – has taken the guesswork out of tracking corporate vehicles. Instead of having to scratch their heads and stare at a map, fleet managers can pinpoint every car and van with the touch of a button.

Masternaut's tracking technology, which is fitted to more than 100,000 vehicles in the UK and Europe, helps managers to keep an eye on their drivers. It can help them spot bad driving, and reduces the chances of drivers getting lost.

It can streamline planning and paperwork, making managers' lives easier and employees more productive. Companies can plan and schedule routes, track vehicles, deliveries and jobs, communicate with mobile workers on the road.

The company has been expanding rapidly. In February, Masternaut revealed it had bought Leeds-based internet service provider Fibre City, in a deal believed to be worth £6m.

Fibre City hosts a UK visitor site for Nasa which contains information about the Mars landing programme. The acquisition has helped Masternaut to store data for its growing customer base. Masternaut's annual turnover is expected to break the £22m barrier this year.

The deal enabled Masternaut Three X to increase its staff numbers to 150, while its annual turnover is expected to break the £22m barrier this year.

Masternaut Three X is one the fastest growing technology companies in the UK, winning a Microsoft Tech Track 100 award in 2007. Its customer list includes Tarmac, United Biscuits, Carillion, Ringway and British Airways.

Masternaut has been rated as one of Britain's best companies to work for.

The vehicle tracking firm – previously known simply as Masternaut – has received a Best Companies 2008 star status accreditation for its outstanding workplaces and investment in people. It was one of five companies in the business services sector to receive the accolade.

Best Companies accreditation follows a Michelin Guide-style star rating. Masternaut Three X was awarded one star, which is a first class rating.

Based solely on staff feedback, the accreditation assesses factors such as leadership, well-being and how employees rate their managers, team spirit and company ethos.

The company has won a number of awards in recognition of its high standards – Martin Port, the company's managing director, was named as the 2008 Ernst & Young Northern Entrepreneur for Technology and Communications.
