Cows and deer tend to align themselves north-south when grazing or resting, according to zoologist Sabine Begall and colleagues at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, who checked Google Earth images of cattle around the world and made their own observations of deer in the Czech Republic.

The scientists' findings suggests large mammals are influenced by Earth's magnetic field, like birds, turtles, salmon and some rodents - and housed cows might be happier if able to turn north-south, although "other factors" might come into play in buildings.
