What a difference a year makes

This time last year, the hay meadows of Ellerton Ings, on the Derwent in East Yorkshire, were a sodden mess. This year, they have given up one of the sweetest crops for years. Cutting started last week, above, and baling finished this week.
Ellerton Ings is part of the Lower Derwent Valley Nature Reserve, run by Natural England.
Winter flooding is part of the natural cycle there. The silt left by the floods nourishes flowers and grasses, which all help make up a good hay. Then the farmer needs enough good weather, at the right time, to do cutting and drying. July delivered it just in time and this week's showers came too late to spoil the harvest.
