White wheat demand rises

A substantial order from Weetabix has bumped up demand for the white wheat variety Zircon, according to the plant breeder, KWS UK.
Grain dealers Centaur and Grainfarmers, who are in the course of amalgamating to become Openfield, have a contract to supply 7,500 tonnes of Zircon grain a year for three years, at £15 a tonne over feed prices, because it gives a lighter sweeter flour than the usual 'red wheats'.
The Weetabix Food Company needs that flour for its range of 'minis', developed over the past five years.
