Dare to go nude
Nudes play it cool this season to make a lasting impression. Stephanie Smith checks out the lighter shades of pale.
There's a lot to be said for going about your business in a quiet way, for creating a slow-burn that seeps into the consciousness.
This is what the nudes have been doing, ever so gently, that unassuming family of neutral beiges, gentle taupes, soft caramels, vanilla creams, dusky pinks, faded roses and pale golds that combine
and mingle to bring the surprisingly sophisticated concoctions that make up one of this season's strongest fashion trends.
On the catwalk, nude and sheer was massive, with layers of sheeny, filmy, luxurious fabrics bringing frills and flounces with frothy clouds of drama and an air of decadence in a look that managed to combine the sexiness of hinted nudity with the elegance of expensive, shimmering fabrics – the ultimate, in sartorial terms, of Posh Totty. Look out for transparent blouses with pussy bows and corsages and wonderful tiered chiffon skirts that bring life and movement.
There was the toned-down safari look too, when crisp cottons in neutral beige and vanilla came together to give a clean and classy feel, either alone or mixed in with rich brown leather and animal and ethnic prints
for a sophisticated world traveller theme.
For a practical day-to-night look, team nude cotton wide-leg trousers with a pale or white chiffon blouse (and a nude cami underneath
for modesty).
Look out too for linen and cotton shift dresses in one of the nudes, and for this season's amazing all-in-ones, for a luxury utility vibe.
Nude and sheeny is unmistakably sexy, perhaps because it reminds of glowing bare skin, and it's a clever look for all dressy and special occasions, as it brings the opportunity to sparkle and shimmer without looking tacky.
Look out for nude satin and for all-over sequin numbers that ooze sass with class.
Don't forget underwear – if you're wearing nude on top, it's a good idea to wear nude beneath, so look out for nude-coloured separates, all-in-ones and especially slips in beige, pale gold and dusky pink (some are so gorgeous, you'll want to wear them alone, as a slip dress – a look, sadly, that suits the under 24s only).
The best news about the nudes is that it's a great trend to buy into in the sales, as it continues into autumn/winter.
Yet another great excuse to hit the shops.
