Just suit yourself

It's back to work for autumn with a new wardrobe of sassy
separates and one-pieces that exude professional glamour. Stephanie Smith shows you how.
Don't even mention Dress Down Friday. Why would we want to dress down, when there's such a fabulous new working wardrobe to be sought out and co-ordinated? New fashions for the coming autumn/winter reveal a return to sleek, old-school glamour, with a dash of drama thrown in for good measure – all of which makes for some fantastic workwear. Indulge your inner dandy with a three-piece suit – there are some gorgeous versions available in pinstripe and tweed.
Waistcoats are big news full-stop for the office, whether worn with skirts (lantern, pencil or kilted) or with trousers. Make the look feminine and sophisticated by teaming your waistcoat with a pussy-bow chiffon or satin blouse under for contrast or tie a silk scarf cravat-style about your neck, fastened with a Victoriana-style brooch.
Don't forget to accessorise with gloves, plus either teetering heels or mannish flats (see the Jonathan Kelsey for Mulberry collection). Or, for a country girl in the city look, go for a tweed belted trouser suit (again, accessories make the look here). For a sharper, younger look, try a pleated skirt or kilt (on or above the knee, depending on your age and the state of your pins), but for work, make sure you keep it smart and dignified with black opaque tights and heels.
Or try a smart shift dress, black and slinky, for an air of retro glamour. Meanwhile, two-in-one dresses, which look like a skirt and blouse but are in fact one-pieces, could have been designed for the office.
Change the look by teaming with different jackets and cardigans.
Finally, accessories. Patent and shiny is the way to go this autumn/winter for work-suitable accessories, so look out for patent black and red shoes and bags to add a dash of hot-shot power dressing. Go, girl.
