Thanks to fashion's obsession with vintage looks, lace is a key trend for the autumn/winter. Stephanie Smith selects some highlights.
Lace was a dominant feature on the international catwalks for autumn/winter, notably at Prada, whose elaborate all-over lace dresses and separates, in cream, gold, black and navy, have barely been off
the front covers of magazines ever since. Elements of lace can be found across all the major trends for the season, from vintage and heritage themes to Gothic and all-black looks. When
it comes to this autumn's heritage story, the country lady look, lace is understandably key.

Mix pretty white and cream lace blouses with tartan or tweed separates and luxurious layered knits or fur gilets, nipped in with a belt – broad or narrow, to suit your shape. Look out for lace-edged silk camis and bias-cut slip dresses for a gorgeously feminine, ever-so-slightly naughty and aristocratic vintage look. Or, keep it simple with a belted Fifties' style lace dress – try a white version teamed with black opaque tights and platform heels. Meanwhile, a lace cropped jacket over black skinny jeans is a surefire winner (see Next). For black and Gothic trends, lace brings a touch of softness and femininity, updating the look from its grungy Eighties' origins. Team black or gold lace blouses and tunics with oilslick leggings or skinny jeans – then add a leather jacket for ultimate cool chic.

Don't be afraid to layer lace on lace, mixing and matching different textures – a delicate lace chiffon with loose-worked crochet-style lace fabric, or huge swirling lace pattern over a satin backdrop that just glints through and provides essential modesty.

Because of its traditional nature, it's acceptable to experiment boldly with lace. All-over lace might look too frumpy on a mature woman, so choose a key lace piece, a jacket or skirt, to team with more structured-looking separates. Lace accessories are available but should be used with care as they can detract attention from the rest of an outfit. But a pair of neat lace black and grey
flats (try New Look) to wear with jeans or shorts is a
nifty way to key into the lace look without looking like a doily dolly.
