The term "must-have" is undoubtedly over-used in fashion writing, but when referring to the coming season's accessories, it's pretty much unavoidable.
For those in need of a wardrobe update, or for those who like their fashion-forward style to be noticed and appreciated, a sharp injection of accessory power is what's needed.

Make no mistake, the ladies who know what's what are busy scanning and vacuuming the shelves of all the key items that can mark them out as the fashion cognoscenti.

New bags, shoes, belts, boots and jewellery – these are what you need now to bring your wardrobe into autumn/winter 2008.

Shoes are easiest for a fast fashion flash as these have become distinctively quirky for the new season, with unusual colourways, heel shapes, new toe shapes and all manner of intricate cut-out detail and embellishment – studs, diamante, stitching, giant sequins and discs – and methods of fastening, from ribbons to zips.

Many shoes are teeteringly high, although pumps continue to grow in acceptability for those who prefer to keep it flat (look out for gorgeous jewelled slippers for evening wear).

Patents, satins and brights, plus grey, cream and black, black, black all feature strongly for shoes and ankle boots. Black patent has never been so vogueish.

Boots are big with over-the-knee styles hopefully bringing a folksy, urban warrior feel rather than Dick Whittington.

Ankle boots and high-vamp shoes instantly update a look and flat, mannish shoes go perfectly with pegged and cropped trousers.

When it comes to bags, there are still some huge creatures available for those who have become used to carrying their world around, but for the coming season the courier satchel is the new shape for work and casual wear, slung around the body and resting low on the hips.

And small is big – baby bags are cool and not just for evening – look out for tiny round balls of bags with cute little handles.

Tomato red is a major trend, too, so try out a red patent bag (M&S has a great one) for a chic look.

Reptile print finishes are everywhere, as are bright colours.

Gloves are predicted to be popular as soon as the temperature plummets (they were all over the catwalks) with fingerless versions available and Audrey Hepburn-style longer types adding instant retro elegance to an outfit.

Finally, costume jewellery is the way to go for autumn, with oversized beads, chains, pendants and gemstones making impact.

Pile it all on, the bigger the better. It's fashion.
