What lies beneath

With lace and satin such major players on the new season's fashion runways, lingerie was always going to shimmy its way into a starring role in this year's winter wardrobe.
A flash of black lace bra beneath a jacket is enough to key into the lace trend without going all-over extravagant, a la Prada. Lace tights, stockings and hold-ups are everywhere, but take care – these can make even fairly slender legs, especially calves, look chunky, and so they really are only for those who actually want their pins to look wider than they are. Any takers?
Lace on lace is crucial to the Glam Goth look, so feel free to team lacy lingerie with lace blouses, dress and jackets, for a sumptuous, curiously prim look. There's nothing prim about Agent Provocateur's latest collection, however, which features Daisy Lowe and Peaches Geldof modelling its Gothic-inspired, high-voltage new Witches collection – lots of lace, satin, suspenders, red lips and attitude.
There's more to lingerie this season than lace, though. In keeping with the heritage catwalk fashion trend, there are some gorgeous vintage-inspired lingerie looks around in beautiful pleated silks and satins, with styles that ooze 1930s glamour and elegance.
Check out the Elle Macpherson Boudoir range and the fabulous offerings from Triumph this season, which feature embellished gold satin bras, and fantastic satin shapewear – the Pureshaper maxi-briefs demonstrate that big knickers don't always have to be unfashionable passion-killers.
Just as on the catwalks, red is a key colour – look for pure red silk and satin, rather than teamed with black lace, if you want a classy look. Nude tones are also on-trend and practical – nude beneath white doesn't show, whereas white does.
Animal prints are going strong and have really come into their own for lingerie this season. Choose bodyshapers and bras that can peep from beneath your outerwear to add a dash of sass. Sexiness and sophistication combined – what more could a girl want?
