Wrap up warm

From vintage-style to military, this season's
new coats are sleek, chic and just the ticket for wrapping up in style, Stephanie Smith checks out some cool warm numbers.
IF you want to make an instant fashion statement this season, make sure you invest in a seriously super-stylish new coat.
There's been a fair amount of shape-shifting going on within the new autumn /winter trends and coats have been the most bold and practical way of showing off all these striking new silhouettes.
It's all about sculpture and volume as curves can be seen on exaggerated round and bulbous shoulders, on cute little peplum-skirted styles and on curving voluminous designs (hide a multiple of sins, these do) that button way up the neck, finishing in a high tie or buttoned collar. Belted wrap-style coats, meanwhile, have a luxurious edge, and are very practical, working well over both jeans and dresses. Look out for colour – there's oodles of gorgeous greens, mustards, purples and rich tomato red, although for a classic look, go for winter white or camel.
There's a strong minimalist feel, with concealed fastenings and collarless cuts bringing a sleek, sculptured look. There are cowl and shawl collars too, which work well with luxe fabrics such as cashmere, and there's an abundance of faux fur. A full faux fur coat can be overwhelming, so a fur collar and cuffs, on a more tailored and slimline version, are a clever way to add a touch of glamour without being swamped.
Military is another major coat trend, with double-breasted, full-skirted coats bringing a splash of feminine dash to outerwear (look out for red military coats with gold buttons – fabulously dramatic and ultra-glam, especially teamed with black patent boots).
A strong heritage theme means lots of tweeds and plaids to choose from, which work well over folksy dresses or tunics and coloured wool tights and slouchy boots, for what has become one of early autumn's key looks.
The mid-season sales are on, presenting the perfect excuse to invest in the best value, best quality coat that you can afford. Classic styles are always a wise choice, so look out for wraps, trenches and neat tailored versions.
