Published Date: 10 October 2008
Far-off echoes of Brief Encounter reverberate throughout this pitch-perfect weepie, in which a guilt-ridden surgeon and an estranged wife are thrust together in a remote beach house.

Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, Nights in Rodanthe stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane and their on-screen chemistry lifts this from being just another formulaic effort.

Adrienne is mulling over her options after throwing out her philandering husband. Paul is running from his responsibilities and anxious to talk to the husband of the woman who died on his operating table.

She's running the house as a hotel for a friend; he's looking for solitude. Naturally, they fall (rather too quickly) into an affair. There is much embracing, kissing, canoodling and walking hand-in-hand through the surf. Two beautiful middle-aged people providing ample proof that love can strike at any age.
