IN MUMBAI, home of the Indian film industry, last November residents were enjoying scorching weather, with temperatures pushing 34 degrees celsius. Meanwhile, an Indian film was crew braving frosty conditions outside an historic North Yorkshire castle to shoot scenes for a Bollywood blockbuster.
Such has been the crowd-pulling impact of the Bollywood Oscars, which brought a host of international celebrities to Yorkshire last summer.
Four of the region's most picturesque locations are providing the backdrop for the supernatural thriller 1920, directed by Vikram Bhatt.
Allerton Castle was transformed into a spooky house for the movie yesterday and scenes are also being shot at Ripley Castle, Bolton Abbey and Bramham Park.
Now, the movie is enjoying its UK premiere at Bradford Media Museum's Bite the Mango film festival. It was the first Bollywood production to be filmed in Yorkshire since the region hosted the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards.
Mr Bhatt said he chose to shoot scenes in Yorkshire because his line producer had attended the IIFAs and Screen Yorkshire, which supports the region's film industry, had sent him photographs of the county's wide range of suitable locations.
He added: "I hope the film can show Yorkshire in a brilliant light, because in India film-goers become tourists and they want to see the locations in the films.
"They will want to see the place where 1920 is set – it worked for the Seychelles and Mauritius, where other Indian films have been shot."
Dheeraj Ratan, who wrote the film's screenplay, said Allerton Castle was perfectly suited for the spooky scenes.
He said: "The director showed me the photographs and we fell in love with the place. It has been untouched by the changes that have gone on in the outside world.
"I'm really happy to see the place and I'm really happy to see that the people here are friendly."
