Steve Bruce slammed referee Steve Bennett for three "unbelievable" decisions in Wigan's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United which ensured the champions retained their title.

Bruce believes Paul Scholes was lucky not to be sent off and the Wigan boss was also fuming over a penalty his side were denied and the one they conceded at the JJB Stadium.

Bennett failed to dish out a second yellow card to Scholes for successive
challenges on Wilson Palacios while Rio Ferdinand was not punished for what Bruce felt was handball in the area.

United were awarded a penalty following a challenge on Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the spot in the 33rd minute to take his tally for the season to 41 goals. Ryan Giggs later marked his record-equalling 758th appearance for the club by scoring the second goal 10 minutes from time after coming off the bench.

Bruce said: "Paul Scholes will go down as one of United's greats. Everything about him is top, top drawer. He knows he got away with it today. Had it been any other day it was another yellow card and he should have been off."

Bruce, however, could not disguise his affection for United and former Reds team-mate Giggs in particular.

He said: "Ryan scored on his debut and has equalled the appearance record today.

"He is a great, great player. "He epitomises what Manchester United are all about."
