A BIZARRE own goal from Ben Purkiss saw York City go down at Cambridge United.
The City right-back diverted a Felino Jardim cross past bewildered Minstermen goalkeeper Michael Ingham with his chest on 51 minutes to secure maximum points. Craig Farrell hit the post late on for the visitors with a header but Colin Walker's men sl
umped to their third straight league defeat.
Both teams missed excellent chances to open the scoring in the first half. Mark Beesley was the Cambridge culprit, somehow lifting a three-yard effort over the bar after Lee McEvilly's low cross on 11 minutes.
Moments later, York striker Farrell was picked out in the penalty box by Steven Hogg's quickly-taken free kick but shot weakly at Dan Potter.
Cambridge forged ahead, however, in the strangest of fashions on 51 minutes.
Jardim raided down the right wing and his cross into the box saw Purkiss attempt to play the ball back to goalkeeper Michael Ingham with his chest.
But the former Gainsborough Trinity full-back watched on in horror as the ball looped over Ingham and into the net.
Farrell went closest to an equaliser when his header struck Potter's left-hand upright.
