HUDDERSFIELD stand bottom of League One following defeat at the New Den where experienced defender David Unsworth missed an 88th-minute penalty that would have rescued them a point.

That Millwall were allowed to boss Huddersfield in the second half annoyed Town manager Stan Ternent more than the penalty miss, and he refused to blame Unsworth, whose spot-kick was too close to David Forde after substitute Michael Collins had been tripped by Tony Craig.

"I don't set a penalty taker and Unsworth had the courage to take it," said Ternent, who described the goals that Town conceded as ridiculous.

"The first was like a Sunday morning goal and the other was the same – a big hump down the middle. I'm disappointed not because we missed a penalty but because we were outfought in the second half," added the manager, even though five of his men were booked

The Lions could have added to their tally but so could Town.

They could have had an earlier penalty for a handling offence, though Millwall manager Kenny Jackett felt the same when referee Keith Hill ruled that the ball struck central defender Nathan Clarke's chest rather than his arm.

It was through Clarke's long throw that Town led after 18 minutes. A poor clearance fell for Liam Dickinson and the young on-loan striker from Derby County, playing up front on his own, planted a lovely overhead kick past goalkeeper Forde.

Town were comfortable until Tresor Kandol levelled on 37 minutes, catching defenders asleep with a header back across the six-yard area from Chris Hackett's deep cross.

The outstanding Lewis Grabban clinched Millwall's first win on 62 minutes, firing under Matt Glennon, then Neil Harris hit a post as the Lions roared

The result left Town, who have invested heavily on new players during the summer with just two points from their opening four games – not what they were expecting in their centenary season.

Millwall: Forde; Hackett, Robinson, Whitbread, Frampton; Abdou, Craig, Grabban, Moore (Martin 76); Harris, Kandol. Unused substitutes: Edwards, Spiller, Brkovic, Fuseini.

Huddersfield Town: Glennon; Holdsworth, N Clarke, Lucketti, Unsworth; Cadamarteri (Parker 19, Jevons 68), Worthington (Collins 60), Craney, Flynn, Roberts; Dickinson. Unused substitutes: Smithies, T Clarke.

Referee: K Hill (Herts).

Man of the match: Lewis Grabban.
