CHAMPIONSHIP

Bristol City 4
Doncaster Rovers 1

Michael McIndoe scored twice against his former side as Bristol City beat Doncaster at Ashton Gate to claim their first home league win of the season.

Playing against his former employers for the first time, McIndoe put the Robins in front front from the spot three minutes after half-time and Nicky Maynard doubled their lead soon after.

Ivan Sproule's fine turn and finish looked to have made the game safe but Richie Wellens pulled a goal back before McIndoe made the game safe with a powerful effort 16 minutes from time.

James O'Connor and Wellens both went close as Doncaster pushed late on.

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson made two changes from the midweek defeat to Birmingham with Weale coming in for the injured Adrian Basso and Sproule replacing Gavin Williams.

Sean O'Driscoll was forced into one change from the side that lost to Charlton as former Bristol City striker Darren Byfield replaced hamstring victim Gareth Taylor.

Bristol City: Weale, Orr, Carey, Fontaine, McAllister, Sproule, Skuse, Johnson, McIndoe, Adebola, Maynard. Substitues: Henderson, Webster, Williams, Trundle, Elliott.
Doncaster Rovers: Sullivan, O'Connor, Mills, Hird, Roberts, Coppinger, Wellens, Stock, Hayter, Guy, Byfield. Substitutes: Chambers, Lockwood, Woods, Price, Elliott.

Norwich City 1 Sheffield United 0

Lee Croft struck late on to secure a first home win of the season for Norwich as they beat Sheffield United 1-0.

The home side struggled to create opportunities and were frustrated when Darel Russell was denied twice in the first half.

Goalkeeper David Marshall made a couple of fine saves to keep the Canaries level at the break as he parried away a Stephen Quinn effort before saving Gary Speed's header.

In the second half Paddy Kenny produced quick-fire saves to deny substitutes Wes Hoolahan and Jamie Cureton.

The Blades looked to snatch a late victory but Danny Webber's strike was saved brilliantly by Marshall.

And it was the Canaries who secured the points in the second minute of injury time as Hoolahan set-up Croft to find the bottom-right corner from inside the area.

Norwich boss Glenn Roeder recalled right-back Jon Otsemobor and Croft after the 1-0 defeat to 10-man QPR in midweek, while left-back Adam Drury was handed his first start of the season and Middlesbrough loanee Jonathan Grounds made his full debut.

Kevin Blackwell made just the single change with Greg Halford coming in at right-back to replace the suspended Sun Jihai.

Norwich: Marshall, Otsemobor, Grounds, Omozusi, Drury, Croft, Fotheringham, Pattison, Bertrand, Sibierski, Russell. Substitutes: Nelson, Cureton, Hoolahan, Lupoli, Archibald-Henville.
Sheff Utd: Kenny, Halford, Morgan, Kilgallon, Naysmith, Cotterill, Speed, Montgomery, Quinn, Beattie, Sharp. Substitutes: Webber, Hendrie, Gillespie, Naughton, Ehiogu.
Referee: Phil Crossley (Kent).

Sheffield Wednesday 0 Ipswich Town 0

SHEFFIELD Wednesday extended their unbeaten home record in a dour goalless draw against Ipswich Town at Hillsborough.

Owls striker Marcus Tudgay smashed a shot against the crossbar in the opening minutes and David Norris did the same for Ipswich near the end – but, that apart, there was very little in the way of goalmouth incident or sparkling football.

The re-appearance of substitute Francis Jeffers, for the first time at home this season after injury, sparked the biggest cheer of the afternoon from a crowd of 17,198.

Tudgay might have done better with an opportunity on 16 minutes but headed over the bar after arriving unmarked at the far post to meet a freekick from Etienne Esajas.

In terms of possession, both sides enjoyed an equal share of the ball but Ipswich looked the more likely winners towards the end with substitute Kevin Lisbie providing the late spark.

Owls goalkeeper Lee Grant also produced a good one handed save in the second half to deny former Owls and Blades midfielder Alan Quinn.

Owls manager Brian Laws had made one change to his side.

Club captain Steve Watson, who was rested for the midweek trip to Reading, returned in midfield with striker Deon Burton dropping to the bench.

Watson was employed in centre midfield with Sean McAllister pushing out wide and winger Jermaine Johnson moved into attack.

Sheff Wed: Grant, Spurr, Gilbert, Wood, McMahon, Watson, McAllister, Esajas, O'Connor, Tudgay, Johnson. Substitutes: Smith, Jeffers, Burton, Clarke, Small.
Ipswich Town: Richard Wright, McAuley, Naylor, Volz, David Wright, Garvan, Shumulikoski, Norris, Quinn, Walters, Stead. Substitutes: Supple, Miller, Haynes, Lisbie, Campo.

Southampton 0 Barnsley 0

Barnsley held out for their first away point of the season as fellow Championship strugglers failed to take advantage of a dominant display at St Mary's.

The Saints had the lion's share of possession throughout but their lack of cutting edge cost them on this occasion as they found returning Reds goalkeeper Heinze Muller in unbeatable form.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, Tomas Pekhart and Adam Lallana were all denied by the German, who has not featured for the Tykes since the middle of last season, as Jan Poortvliet's side once again failed to shine in front of their own fans.

The Tykes will be grateful of the point as they were outplayed for the majority of the match and failed to really test Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis during the 90 minutes.

David McGoldrick came close to netting a last-gasp winner for the Saints but once again Muller stood firm and saved his 20-yard volley.

Reds manager Simon Davey shuffled his pack for the trip to the south coast with long-term absentees Muller and Anderson De Silva coming into the starting line-up in place of Luke Steele and Jon Macken. That meant Iain Hume was moved up alongside Kayode Odejayi in attack.

Czech striker Pekhart earned a place in Saints' XI after he came off the bench to score the equaliser against Ipswich on Wednesday, while Wright-Phillips and Joseph Mills were also recalled to the starting line-up.

Southampton: Davis, Cork, Wotton, Perry, Mills, Wright-Phillips, Gillett, Surman, Lallana, McGoldrick, Pekhart. Substitutes: Bialkowski, John, Dyer, Thomson, Davies.
Barnsley: Muller, Foster, Moore, Guedes, Kozluk, Campbell-Ryce, Colace, De Silva, Howard, Hume, Odejayi. Substitutes: Steele, Macken, Devaney, Hassell, Leon.

LEAGUE ONE

Carlisle United 0 Leeds United 2

Luciano Becchio and Jermaine Beckford fired the goals as Leeds United enjoyed a successful return to brunton Park against Carlisle United.

It was their first visit to the ground since last season's memorable play-off semi-final success.

Becchio was on hand to rifle home a Paul Telfer cross in the 32nd minute.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson almost equalised for the home side before Jermaine Beckford and Rui Mrques both went close to inreasing United's lead before half-time arrived.

Chances came and went at either end after the break but it wasn't until the 86th minute when Beckford fired from close range that the points were made safe by Gary McAllister's side.

Carlisle: Williams, Raven, Livesey, Keogh, Horwood, Taylor, Bridge-Wilkinson, Thirlwell, Hackney, Graham, Carlton. Substitutes: Joyce, Myrie-Williams, Bridges, Howarth, Dobie.
Leeds: Lucas, Richardson, Marques, Telfer, White, Hughes, Kilkenny, Douglas, Delph, Beckford, Becchio. Substitutes: Ankergren, Prutton, Howson, Robinson, Snodgrass.
Referee: P Walton

Huddersfield Town 3 Northampton Town 2

Two second-half strikes from Michael Flynn put Huddersfield in control against Northampton.

Flynn first struck in the 64th minute before grabing his second 15 minutes later.

Substitute Liam Davis pulled back a late consolation for the visitors.
In the first-half, Town's early-season struggles had looked set to continue at the Galpharm Stadium when Northampton went ahead in the 25th minute through a Jim Goodwin own goal.

But it wasn't long before the home side were level when Andy Booth equalised in the 34th minute, seeing the sides go in level at the break.

Huddersfield Town: Glennon, Goodwin, Nathan Clarke, Butler, Skarz, Roberts, Craney, Worthington, Flynn, Booth, Dickinson. Substitutes: Holdsworth, Parker, Kamara, Beckett, Unsworth.
Northampton: Dunn, Little, Hughes, Dolman, Crowe, Larkin, Guttridge, Osman, Jackman, Akinfenwa, Hawley. Subs: Fielding, Constantine, Henderson, Davis, Gilligan.
Referee: Colin Webster (Tyne & Wear)

LEAGUE TWO

Bradford City 1 Bournemouth 3

Bradford City slipped to a surprise defeat, going down 3-1 to struggling Bournemouth at Valley Parade.

Stuart McCall';s side had enjoyed a prom, ising start to the season but were shocked when they went behind to the Cherries in the 39th minute through Danny Hollands.

Joe Colbeck showed perfect timing when his 43rd-minute strike got City back on level terms but the second half dominance expected by the home fans failed to materialise.

Joe Goulding restored the visitors' lead in the 54th minute to make it 2-1 and it got worse for the home side in the 70th minute when centre-half Jason pearce made it 3-1 to Bournemouth.

Bradford City: Evans, Arnison, Lee, Clarke, Heckingbottom, Daley, McLaren, Bullock, Colbeck, Thorne, Michael Boulding. Substitutes: Bower, Conlon, Moncur, Nix, Furman.
Bournemouth: Jalal, Cooper, Guyett, Pearce, Cummings, Bartley, Igoe, Anderton, Hollands, Goulding, Bradbury. Substitutes: Pryce, Pitman, Wagstaff, Ward, McQuoid.
Referee: David Webb (Lancashire)

Rotherham United 1 Luton Town 0

LEFT WINGER Alex Rhodes scored a freak goal to give Rotherham victory and leave them on just minus three points, having started the season with a 17 points deduction.

The Hatters on the other hand are still on minus 20 at the bottom, having begun the campaign on minus 30.

This first meeting between sides on minus points was a poor affair in the first half. Rotherham's best chance came in the ninth minute when Broughton, falling backwards, spooned his shot over from eight yards after Reuben Reid headed down a cross from Pablo Mills.

Luton's only opportunity came from the game's first corner in the 35th minute when Michael Spillane headed over at the far post from Rossi Jarvis's flag kick.

The Millers made two changes up front against a Luton side managed by former Rotherham chief Mick Harford.

Drewe Broughton replaced Mark Burchill and Alex Rhodes came in for Ryan Taylor.

Spanish striker Omar Garcia, who has finally received international clearance to play, was on the bench.

Rotherham got on top after the break but there was a huge slice of fortune associated with their 61st-minute goal, Rhodes over-hitting a cross from the left touchline and seeing it float into the net over goalkeeper Dean Brill, who injured his back colliding with the far post.

A volley from Rhodes also brought a full-length save from Brill and Reid almost turned in a shot from Broughton only to have it cleared off thre line for a corner.

Rotherham United: Warrington, Lynch, Sharps, Fenton, Nicholas, Danny Harrison, Mills, Cummins, Broughton, Reid, Rhodes. Substitutes: Cann, Burchill, Hudson, Green, Garcia.
Luton Town: Brill, Gnakpa, Worley, Spillane, Emanuel, Jarvis, Keane, Hall, Pugh, Martin, Parkin. Substitutes: Logan, Charles, Roper, Asafu-Adjaye, Watson.
Referee: P Gibbs (West Midlands)
