Ternent, who took charge in the summer, has yet to win a league game ahead of today's trip to Cheltenham despite signing 10 new players.
Chairman-elect Dean Hoyle has set a target of promotion in the club's Centenary season but, with four games go
ne, the Terriers are rock bottom of the table.
Ternent said: "I have a good enough squad to get promotion. People will laugh at that now, but we will see at the end of the season. There's still a long way to go and I think four games into the season is too early to form an opinion.
"The main thing is to remain positive – you've got to look at the overall picture.
"It takes a while to jam players in but whatever happens, we've got good competition for places now all around the squad.
"The only thing I have to do now is put in a little more quality."
Town would have recorded their first win of the season last week at Millwall had veteran defender David Unsworth not missed a late penalty.
"Promotion takes patience and hard work," stressed Ternent.
"I remember winning this league with Bury (11 years ago) and we had one point after five games.
"My youngest boy told me that I had a worse start than that at Burnley, when we went up as well, so I always try and look on the bright side of things."
Ternent's style of leadership is also coming under scrutiny from Town fans, but the 62-year-old said: "I know people call me stubborn and call me arrogant.
"People say that about me, but I'm not – I am just very single -minded about what I do.
"I'll listen to advice and things like that but I know which way I'm going and I'll get there. Sooner or later, we'll get there," he insisted.
Team news: Strikers Danny Cadamarteri and Andy Booth are both ruled out by injury while centre-back Andy Butler is unavailable for the third game in a row due to a back problem. Midfielder James Berrett has recovered from an ankle injury but is with the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad. Cheltenham give a debut to former Sheffield Wednesday striker Lloyd Owusu.
