A number of the squad have made the step up from the Under-21s and Wednesday's trip to face Germany in a World Cup qualifier will be a big test.
Wales have a 0-0 draw to their credit away to the Germans in Frankfurt 11 months ago.
But their hos
ts had qualified for the Euro 2008 finals by then and very little, other than pride, rested on the outcome.
But having seen a side that included six Under-21s beat Liechtenstein 2-0 in Cardiff on Saturday, Toshack wants more from the big names.
Toshack said: "The younger lads have done well. Maybe a few of the older ones can step up to the plate and do a bit more for us. We do need our more experienced players to stand up and be counted, to perform.
"We will have a look at the video of the game when we drew in Frankfurt last year, assess the opposition and have a real crack at them again.
"If we could get a goalless draw again it will be a terrific result, particularly as Germany did drop a couple of points in an earlier draw with Finland."
Wales forced themselves ahead near the break with David Edwards' first international goal, and if Craig Bellamy had scored a penalty a couple of minutes later the second period would have been much easier.
But he missed and Wales were left to struggle before Chad Evans' deflected second goal sealed their second win.
