With the onset of spring we all feel a need to clear out the clutter and clean up the place. It's a detox for the home; an exfoliation of the soul.
But delve a little deeper – this time into the recesses of your mind rather than your living room – and the best spring clean you can exercise is a spring clean of the mind.

Never was there a better time than spring to really re-evaluate your life, your goals and your aspirations.

Spring is a natural time for regeneration – new year resolutions in January and the depths of winter are going against nature – it's the spring that lends itself to a new start, new life and renewed optimism.

It really is akin to spring cleaning your life – true vitality has to come from the inside out and if your mind is working against you and constantly feeding you negative thoughts, negative outcomes naturally will arise. Like attracts like – think positive and act positive and you will attract positivity into your life.

Three years ago I was working as a hotel group's key account sales manager. I was utterly soulless, unsatisfied and travelling 55,000 miles a year, meeting unrealistic sales targets and ultimately chasing the wrong goal – to earn the respect and admiration of my father, which I never got.

The ladder I was using to reach my goals was quite simply leaning against the wrong wall.

I didn't change my thinking, my perspective and my goals until three years ago when I started to train to be a coach.

I don't regret leaving my old job one little bit. I am now living my life purpose. I am reaching for the stars and experiencing the utmost fulfilment helping others to reach their potential and watching them blossom before my eyes.

Here are my top tips to spring clean your life – from the inside out:

n Look at what in your life makes you feel positive and energised and do more of it – whether that's going on a bike ride or seeing friends, do more of the things that make you feel good.

n Reduce your exposure to negativity, ie negative friends and negative thoughts – your emotions can get tied into negativity and can bring you down, making it harder to be more positive.

  • Positively frame everything in your mind – don't think "it's going to be one of those days" just because you've stubbed your toe this morning! If you think it will be a bad day, it will. Try thinking "today will be a good day".

  • Find a positive in every situation – there is always more than one way to interpret a situation.

The likelihood is your brain is programmed to look for the negative. Whatever the situation, there is always a positive outcome ahead.

  • Talk to yourself as you would if you were your own best friend and don't rely on other people to make you feel good. Be nice to yourself, compliment yourself and you will feel empowered.

  • Focus on what results you would like to achieve – if you think of the worst case scenario, your mind will try and prove you right.

  • Be aware of how your thoughts are aligned with your reality – if you want something ask for it out loud. Saying the words will make it more real and program your mind to make it happen.

  • View the world as if it were conspiring to make your life better – if you always think something bad is going to happen, it probably will.

  • Be aware of the foods you eat and how they make you feel. Is a "treat" really a treat if it makes you feel bloated, guilty and sluggish after you've eaten it.

  • If negative thoughts enter your mind, consciously think: "Not now thank you" and literally send them away.

Lisa Clifford offers advice which does not appeal to some since her article carries with it an advertisement
asking us to remember Macmillan Nurses in our Wills. I'm quickly going out for a pint or two before I'm hypnotised!
