PCT's bid to give obese children a fresh start

More than 2,000 obese children are being targeted in a bid to help them lose weight.
Rotherham Primary Care Trust's three-year plan will include a partnership with Carnegie Weight Management, experts in childhood obesity, based at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Children with the greatest need will have their stay at the Carnegie Residential Camp in Leeds paid for. Thirty eight children have already been selected to attend the camp this summer.
After completion, the children and families will graduate to a continued programme of support. As well as the three month follow-up after the residential camp, families will be able to access the Carnegie Clubs, community-based programmes, which will be running throughout Rotherham. Families can also seek support from a range of specialist practitioners who will provide one-to-one advice.
Carol Weir, public health specialist at Rotherham Primary Care Trust said: "This level of investment shows the sheer strength
of commitment that Rotherham PCT has in tackling childhood obesity in our town. With one in three children in Rotherham overweight or obese, this is a serious issue that warrants serious investment.
"The comprehensive approach will ensure that success can be achieved
on all levels.
"We are excited to work with Carnegie Weight Management and look forward to providing Rotherham children with a healthier future."
