Ten-man Barnsley produced a stunning fightback in the South Yorkshire derby to relieve the pressure on Tykes boss Simon Davey.
Trailiing 1-0 to neighbours Doncaster Rovers, and down to 10 men after Darren Moore saw red, the Tykes stunned the visitors with a four-goal salvo.
There were mixed fortunes for the Sheffield clubs: United thumped Bristol City 3-0 at Bramall Lane,
but an injury-hit Owls were hammered 4-0 by Plymouth.
Huddersfield were pipped at the last by high-flying Leicester City in League One, losing 3-2, while Leeds United saw their winning run come to an abrupt end with a 2-0 reverse at Peterborough.
Rotherham United finally wiped out their points deficit in League Two, beating struggling Grimsby Town, Bradford City forced to settle for a point against Luton.
Coca-Cola ChampionshipBarnsley 4 Doncaster Rovers 1Maceo Rigters made his first league start for the Reds, replacing Jon Macken. Strikers Gareth Taylor and Lewis Guy and midfielder James Coppinger are all recalled by Rovers.
Brian Stock drew first blood with an 11th-minute penalty for Rovers, after a foul on Guy. And it got worse for the hosts when Darren Moore saw red in the second half for a professional foul on Guy, only for Stephen Foster to nick an equaliser for the 10 men.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce turned the game on its head on the hour as the winger cut in from the right and edged Barnsley ahead.
Substitute Jon Macken made it 3-1 after pouncing on Neil Sullivan's fumble from Martin Devaney's shot, before Iain Hume added a fourth.
Plymouth Argyle 4 Sheffield Wednesday 0Mark Beevers and Steve Watson were recalled in place of injury-hit Richard Wood and Peter Gilbert. But Beevers was picking the ball out of his own goal after a 15th-minute own goal, under pressure from Rory Fallon.
Paul Gallagher doubled Plymouth's lead on 25 minutes, Jamie Mackie adding a third five minutes later. Michael Seip added a late fourth goal for Plymouth.
Sheffield United 3 Bristol City 0New signing Brian Howard was a substitute for the Blades after arriving on loan from Barnsley. Winger Greg Halford missed out after being stretchered off with a knee injury and a gashed shin in the midweek victory over Doncaster Rovers. Chinese international Sun Jihal, available again after serving a four-match ban, was also a substitute.
James Beattie smashed home in first-half stoppage time, after good work from David Cotterill, to give the Blades an interval lead. And 11 minutes into the second half Matthew Kilgallon thought he had headed home a second goal, only for City defender Liam Fontaine to be credited with the goal.
The Cotterill-Beattie combination then struck again on 69 minutes to make it 3-0 for United.
Coca-Cola League OneHuddersfield Town 2 Leicester City 3Chris Lucketti and Danny Cadamarteri had to settle for places on the substitutes bench as Stan Ternent kept faith with the side which drew 1-1 at Oldham.
Matt Fryatt finally broke Town's resistance five minutes after the restart, forcing the ball home, and grabbed his second from the penalty spot on 65 minutes.
Gary Roberts handed Huddersfield a lifeline four minutes later, before Liam Dickinson netted an equaliser.
But Town's fightback came to nothing as Lloyd Dyer grabbed a stoppage-time winner.
Peterborough United 2 Leeds United 0George Boyd opened the scoring for Posh just 90 seconds after the half-time restart, despite Dominic Green appearing to handle the ball during the build-up.
Craig Mackail-Smith pounced to make it 2-0 in stoppage time to make it a miserable afternoon for Leeds, who saw goalkeeper David Lucas suffer a broken finger.
League Two
Bradford City 1 Luton Town 1City were without TJ Moncur after the defender suffered concussion in last weekend's defeat at Shrewsbury Town. But the Bantams went in goalless after they failed to break down a stubborn Luton defence, and their cause wasn't helped when defender Paul Heckingbottom was red carded late in the game.
The 10 men of Bradford finally did make the breakthrough with just 11 minutes remaining, Barry Conlon pouncing for the Bantams. But the hosts were unable to hang on as Michael Spillane grabbed an equaliser.
Rotherham United 4 Grimsby Town 1Striker Richie Barker started on the bench for the Millers after returning to the club on loan from Hartlepool United. Spanish striker Omar Garcia (shin) and midfielder Danny Harrison (thigh) missed out.
The Millers were on the back foot after 29 minutes as Danny Boshell pounced for the Mariners. But Reuben Reid brought Don Valley to their feet as he conjured up an equaliser, before Mark Hudson put the hosts ahead. Michael Cummins fired in Rotherham's third on 69 minutes.
A dream debut for Barker saw him head United's fourth as Rotherham overhauled their 17-point penalty deficit.
Blue Square Premier
York City 0 Cambridge United 0The Minstermen are without Onome Sodje after the striker was ruled out for up to six weeks. The 20-year-old damaged his hamstring in last weekend's high-scoring draw at Stevenage and could miss five league games and a couple of FA Cup ties.
And his team-mates certainly missed the striker as they were forced to settle for a point in a goalless draw with Cambridge.
