Hull have to play waiting game

PHIL BROWN is waiting to hear which – if any – of the five bids Hull City have lodged for targeted players will come to fruition before the closing of the transfer window early next week.

The Tigers have enjoyed an encouraging start to life in the Premier League with a return of four points from the opening two games.

Despite that, and Brown having made eight signings since winning promotion via the play-offs last May, Hull's man
ager is determined to bolster his squad further ahead of Monday night's transfer deadline.

Fraizer Campbell is understood to remain high on the club's wishlist – either on loan or on a permanent basis – but any move is entirely dependent on whether Manchester United can prise Dimitar Berbatov away from Tottenham Hotspur before Monday.

Brown is determined, however, not to put all his emphasis on one target and revealed yesterday that he has made two "serious bids" for strikers, one of which is believed to be Huddersfield-born Campbell.

The Tigers chief has also lodged offers for a midfielder and two unnamed defenders with cover on the left side of the back four likely to be a priority with Sam Ricketts having to swap from right to left-back after Andy Dawson limped out of last weekend's draw at Blackburn Rovers.

Brown, who like several of his squad plans to grow a moustache during the next month to highlight testicular cancer after reserve team goalkeeper Matt Duke successfully overcame the illness last season, said: "We are working hard behind the scenes to try and get players in. But we can only do our own bit, as has been highlighted by the Manchester United-Tottenham-Berbatov scenario.

"It is only possible to do as much as you can, you still need someone else to say 'yes' as well. As far as we are concerned, we have bids on the table for a number of players.

"We are interested in a number of players and if they become available at the other end, hopefully they will become Hull City players.

"But until that happens, I will just do as much as I can.

"We have bids in for two strikers, two for defenders and one for a midfielder. Obviously, if one (striker) falls into place then that automatically takes out the other one."

Brown also revealed that several of those on the fringe of Hull's squad have been attracting interest during the last few days.

He added: "There is interest for four of our players. One is a very serious bid, which has been accompanied by interest in the same player from two other clubs."

A more pressing concern than the transfer window for Brown is tomorrow's meeting with Wigan Athletic at the KC Stadium.

The Hull manager is a huge admirer of the Latics and admits the Lancashire club offer a useful template to anyone wanting to consolidate a hard-won place in the top flight.

Brown has one major selection dilemma with Marlon King unable to play due to the terms of his season-long loan switch from the JJB Stadium.

Both Dean Windass, who is still waiting to make his 100th Premier League appearance after being confined to the bench in the opening two games, and Caleb Folan are vying for a starting berth.

Brown said: "The old man (Windass) showed on Tuesday night (in the 2-1 defeat to Swansea City in the Carling Cup) that he can still put the ball in the net. What Dean wants is to play football. I gave him that opportunity on Tuesday and he scored. So, he ticks all the boxes.

"Do I repay him with a start on Saturday? The answer to that remains to be seen.

"Caleb, being a former Wigan player, is another option. They are my two main options, with the possibility of a change of system as well.

"Geovanni has shown he can cause problems in the position he has played. Maybe he can cause a few more problems with two forwards up top. It is a case of 'watch this space'."

George Boateng remains Hull's only major injury doubt with the thigh strain he sustained in the opening-day win at home to Fulham.
