HULL CITY manager Phil Brown has offered Greek international Stelios Giannakopoulos the opportunity to stay in the Premier League next season.

Stelios, who made two appearances for Greece in Euro 2008, is currently looking for a new club after being released by Bolton.

The Tigers have also submitted an offer for Plymouth's Hungarian international winger Peter Halmosi, but have fallen sho
rt of the club's £2m asking price.

Assistant-manager Brian Horton has also confirmed that Tottenham and England defender Anthony Gardner is another target for the newly-promoted Tigers. Gardner played under Horton at Port Vale before being sold to Spurs for £1m eight years ago.

"I know Anthony very well and he is a player we have asked about, but he would cost a lot of money and there are other clubs interested," said Horton, who played down talk of a move for the former Sheffield United striker Colin Kazim-Richards.

Horton said that Manchester United striker Fraizer Campbell and West Brom defender Neil Clement are unlikely to be returning to the KC Stadium in the immediate future.

Campbell spent the majority of last season on loan with the Tigers and scored 15 goals while Clement made five appearances on loan in March.

"I think Sir Alex (Ferguson) wants to have a look at Fraizer through pre-season and he wanted to go back as well to see if they wanted him," said Horton. "He did fantastic for us last season and he is going to be a quality player. We'll just have to monitor that as the situation goes on."

On Clement, Horton said: "He was on our radar ,but West Brom won't let him go at the moment because he went back and did very well at the end of last season."

Leeds United midfielder Jonny Howson has agreed a new deal to stay at Elland Road until 2011. Although Howson, 20, still had two years left on his existing deal, the club wanted to reward his progress last season and deter prospective suitors.

If Leeds win promotion to the Championship, Howson will also secure another year on his contract.

Manager Gary McAllister said: "We're all delighted. He's a player who has come through the academy and is a local lad. He has a lot of potential and a lot of ammunition to develop his game and I'm pleased I've got the opportunity to help his development."

Barnsley's Oakwell stadium has been chosen to stage Manchester City's first qualifying round tie in this season's UEFA Cup. The Premier League club needed an alternative venue because their own pitch was not going to be ready in time due to concerts being staged at Eastlands this summer.

Although Huddersfield Town's Galpharm Stadium was also considered, UEFA yesterday confirmed that City would play the tie at Oakwell. The exact date will be confirmed after the draw on July 1, but will either be on July 16/17 or July 30/31.

Former Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough defender Nigel Pearson has been appointed as new manager of Leicester. Pearson, who was released by Southampton at the end of last season, becomes the sixth manager in the last 16 months at the Walkers Stadium.

Leicester were relegated from the Championship under Ian Holloway last season and will be playing third tier football for the first time in their 120-year history.

Rotherham United hope to beat Grimsby Town to the signature of striker Michael Boulding.

Leeds United Ladies FC have signed England Under-23 international striker Carla Cantrell from local rivals Doncaster Rovers Belles.
