PHIL BROWN has pledged to continue Hull City's bold approach after his players again showed they will not be intimidated on the Premier League stage.
The Tigers followed the impressive opening-day win at home to Fulham by claiming a deserved point from the trip to Blackburn Rovers.

Against a side who had not lost at home in 2008, Hull cancelled out Jason Roberts's 38th-minute opener with Richard Garcia's header just 90 seconds later and could have even claimed all three points with steadier finishing.

The draw was reward for Brown's chosen method of playing with Hull striking a good balance between protecting their own goal and pouring forward whenever in possession.

This was never better illustrated than in stoppage time when it was Hull and not Blackburn who went in search of a winner with only Paul Robinson's saves from substitute Caleb Folan and Sam Ricketts ensuring the score remained level.

Bernard Mendy was also unfortunate not to have a late scoring opportunity with only a last-ditch tackle from Steven Reid on the edge of the area denying the French defender a shot at goal after neat link-play with Marlon King.

Brown said: "We didn't try and shut up shop because I thought there was an opportunity to get the three points.

"I thought Geovanni had done his work and was looking a bit jaded. He had been carrying an injury all week, his abductor muscle.

"But we got 60 minutes out of him and 30 from Caleb Folan. I thought there was a potency in the Folan-Marlon King partnership. Maybe that will start some games.

"It is nice to be able to throw match-winners on, that is the beauty of having seven substitutes.

"As for the quality in front of the opposition goal, there was an opportunity for Craig Fagan to step into the six-yard box in the first half to have a tap-in from Dean Marney's cross.

"It was just that bit of indecision. But that will come with games and getting confidence from gaining points."

On Hull's haul of four points from two games since winning promotion via the play-offs, Brown added: "To get something on your travels in any division is difficult, but you have to get something away from home and win your home games.

"It has been pleasing to see us do both things in such a short space of time. The pressure now mounts for the third one against Wigan at the KC (next weekend)."

The manner of Hull's performance was even more impressive than the opening-day efforts against Fulham when the London side had threatened to rip Brown's side apart in the opening 20 minutes.

Against Rovers, Hull played without fear with the presence of Dean Marney in midfield – George Boateng having failed to recover from a thigh injury – alongside Ian Ashbee meaning the visitors' midfield had much more of a balance.

Brown was equally pleased with his side's defensive efforts with a strikeforce he rates as one of the best in the Premier League being largely kept in check.

Blackburn did open the scoring on 38 minutes when Roberts timed his run to perfection to race on to Reid's pass before beating Boaz Myhill with a deft finish. But, otherwise, neither Roberts nor Roque Santa Cruz, who ended speculation over his future by signing a new four-year contract before the game, were able to make much headway against the impressive Michael Turner and Anthony Gardner.

The Hull manager said: "I was delighted with our two young centre-halves.

"Last week, Everton had two experienced centre-halves who were bullied to an extent by Santa Cruz and Roberts (when Blackburn won 3-2).

"That did not happen to us. If anyone won the battle, it was us. That was the most pleasing thing. We were dishevelled towards the end with (left-back) Andy Dawson getting an injury, meaning our right-back had to move to left-back and Bernard Mendy coming on for his first game. So, to get a clean sheet (during the second half) in those circumstances was absolutely fantastic.

"We have put a lot of hard work in on the training ground, working on the basics. It is a fantastic achievement to say we have four points from two games with a team that is, basically, one that has been playing Championship football. The confidence levels are up. The players seem to be enjoying the experience. They are not fearing it.

"I bumped into Joe Royle afterwards and he said they are playing without fear. And, to me, that is key because if you play with fear, then you cannot express yourself."
