LEEDS UNITED have vehemently denied speculation that talks have taken place with a Canadian sports firm over a possible takeover at Elland Road.

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment had been linked with a move for the Yorkshire club with a report even claiming talks had taken place between the company and chairman Ken Bates.

However, a statement from United said: "The story is completely untrue and no talks have ever taken place."

United are set to offer a new contract to Jonny Howson following his impressive season in the centre of midfield with the club hoping to conclude a new deal quickly.

The Leeds-born 20-year-old only signed his contract last October, but the manner of his displays since then have prompted the new offer.

Scunthorpe have rejected Burnley's improved offer for striker Martin Paterson.

Burnley offered £450,000 with another £50,000 after 30 appearances plus other add-ons.
