Thompson decides to call it a day
LEEDS UNITED captain Alan Thompson has announced his retirement.
The 34-year-old, who was capped once for England against Sweden in 2004, has not played since the 1-0 win at Swindon Town on March 1, but was part of manager Gary McAllister's squad for the League One play-off final at Wembley.
Thompson also played for Bolton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Celtic in a career spanning 17 years. He said: "I have had a good career, but I have decided to call it a day.
"The high point was playing for England, but I have got plenty of good memories.
"I am going to take a bit of time out now, but I would like to stay involved in the game."
Thompson admitted his time at Leeds was "enjoyable", but added: "I had hoped to have played more of a part and it was disappointing to finish on a low at Wembley."
Darren Kenton will also leave Elland Road this summer after not being retained, but David Lucas and Tomi Ameobi have been offered new deals by Gary McAllister.
