FORGET the Bow Street Runners – these are the far speedier West Yorkshire Police runners. A team of more than 100 officers from the force is to run the 2009 Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10K, including Deputy Chief Constable David Crompton.

Most of those taking part in the run are based in north-east Leeds with a team of over 75 officers running to raise funds for Martin House Children's Hospice at Boston Spa, near Wetherby, alongside charities supported by Jane's Appeal.

Mr Crompton said: "The Jane Tomlinson run is a fantastic event and alongside a number of other officers from across the force I am looking forward to taking part this year.

"Knowing the competitive nature of police officers, I'm sure there will be some friendly rivalry of who will post the best time but as long as we all cross the finish line and raise as much money as possible I will be more than happy.

"Cancer is something that touches many of us both personally and professionally and the race itself is a great way for people from many different walks of life to come together with the common goal of raising money for a very worthwhile cause."

Mike Tomlinson, whose late wife Jane raised £1.85m for charity, said: "This is the biggest team in the history of the Leeds 10K and represents a great effort by West Yorkshire Police and we are very grateful that they have chosen to help the charities supported by Jane's Appeal with their fundraising.

"June 21 is going to be a fantastic day – our biggest and best event to date. There are still a few places if there are people who would like to sign up but entries will close in the next few weeks."

The 2009 Jane Tomlinson's Leeds 10K – supported by the Yorkshire Post as a media partner – takes place on Sunday June 21. For entry information visit www.runforall.com
