Leeds Carnegie v Manchester
WITH the 'settling in' period now officially over, Henry Paul is set to make his long-awaited debut for Leeds Carnegie tomorrow against struggling Manchester.
Paul makes his return to the union code after two years with Harlequins RL and, after being put through his paces in two A games since arriving on a full-time basis two weeks ago, he finds himself lining up at centre alongside Rob Vickerman.
With Manchester lying bottom of National One after the opening four games, it should be a relatively comfortable return for Paul, although head coach Neil Back was quick to point out nobody's place in the starting line-up is guaranteed.
"Henry brings vast experience with him," said Back.
"He is a very talented, confident player but there has obviously been a settling in period for him since arriving at the club.
"We've spoken with him and told him where we see him integrating in to our squad. There is a lot of competition here to get in the team, he knows that.
"He has played two A games so far and is up to speed with our structure and calling patterns.
"It is about giving him an opportunity to show his leadership and his quality, which he has undoubtedly got."
As well as the usual research carried out on opposing teams, Back may well have swapped a few notes with Otley coach Peter Clegg when the two sides met at Headingley a fortnight ago.
Otley were promoted along with Manchester and although the Grove Park club have struggled to adapt Back believes that will only add to their resolve in attempting to scupper what should on paper be a simple home win for Leeds.
"Manchester have shown good form during their games so far this year," said Back.
"They have competed well and they will challenge us. We have picked a side that we hope can win the game and pick up a bonus point – we are still picking a strong side that we believe can win."
Other changes in the Leeds squad see right-winger Scott Armstrong, who scored two tries after coming on as a replacement at Rotherham last week, is recalled to the starting line up while 20-year-old Peter Wackett gets the chance to impress on the opposite wing.
Otley take their search for a first win of the season to Birmingham where they will face a Moseley side looking to recover from last week's 70-10 thrashing at the hands of Exeter.
Peter Clegg's side came close to registering a first victory at home to Cornish Pirates last week but fell just short, going down 31-25.
It has been a tough return to National One for the Yorkshire club but Clegg has seen enough in the opening weeks to give him reasons to be optimistic.
"Last week was a great improvement, but we have to make sure that continues," said Clegg. "At the moment what we need is the win, we need the points. Last week Moseley did get thrashed at Exeter but, I'd rather face a team who had won convincingly the week before we played them.
"They rested a few players last week and we'll be one of those sides they'll be expecting to beat at home."
New Wharfedale coach James Tiffany says he is pleased with the response he has had from his players this season.
Wharfedale, who finished sixth in National Two last year, have picked up one win from their opening three games and welcome a Redruth side in second place and looking to maintain their 100 per cent record.
In the pack, Tom Horner makes a return after recovering from a strain, and Tom Cockell is selected at flanker, while Ben Fear returns to the bench following his three-game suspension.
"We are improving week on week and it's going well so far – the response from the players has been really positive," said Tiffany.
"They are a very motivated bunch of guys and it's up to me to try and help them achieve the targets they have set for themselves this season."
In National Three North,
Halifax take their search for their first points of the season to seventh-placed Nuneaton, while Harrogate also face a tough trip, travelling to unbeaten leaders Leicester Lions.
Bradford and Bingley hope to pick up their first win at home against Caldy as Huddersfield and Hull Ionians are also on home ground against Macclesfield and Darlington Mowden Park, respectively.
