HENRY PAUL will have to wait at least another week to mark his return to first-team rugby union with Leeds Carnegie after missing out on a place in the squad for tomorrow's Yorkshire derby against Rotherham Titans at Clifton Lane.
The 34-year-old
former England international played at full-back in an 'A' game on Monday night, as the coaching team of Andy Key and Neil Back look to get him ready since his decision to return to the 15-man code following two years with Super League's Harlequins RL.
Key said Paul would be handed a chance to shine at his favoured position of centre in another 'A' game against Bath on Monday with a view to getting him in contention for next weekend's National One game against Manchester at Headingley Carnegie.
Elsewhere, Leeds make eight changes to the starting line-up. In the back line, Leigh Hinton returns at full back for Scott Armstrong while the centre pairing of Jonny Hepworth and Scott Barrow is reunited having missed out in last week's 58-14 win over Otley.
Former Rotherham captain Joe Bedford replaces Scott Mathie, while captain Mike MacDonald and Tommy McGee will start as props in place of Fosi Pala'amo and Pete Bucknall.
Phil Murphy replaces Erik Lund in the second row, while Scottish international Jon Dunbar comes in for Andy Boyde in the back row.
Although Rotherham are still looking for their first win of the season, director of rugby Key said his players were well aware of the potential threat for an upset.
"We've been watching them closely and like every other side we will treat them with a huge amount of respect," said Key. "They are quite capable of putting in the kind of performance that could rattle us but, once again, we are really just focusing on ourselves.
"What we need to do is make sure that when we get out there we are in the right frame of mind and ready to go."
Key said he and head coach Back were virtually choosing from a full squad now, with only Lee Blackett and Jason Strange missing through injury, while Paul and Kearnan Myall are close to a call-up. Calum Clark still has two matches of his suspension to run.
"It is now getting to the stage where everyone is fit and available for selection and that can only bode well for the squad," added Key.
"Kearnan (Myall) came through his comeback game on Monday night with no side effects and Henry (Paul) was able to get a feel for our side in that game.
"He will get another game in the 'A' team on Monday at Bath, this time moving up to centre and that will hopefully get him up to speed for the first team action."
Rotherham coach Craig West is more interested in the development of his own part-time squad than expectations surrounding promotion favourites Leeds.
The Titans lost for the third successive time when they went down 28-22 at Doncaster last Sunday.
But while the result went against them, an improved perormance on the field earned Rotherham their first point of the season.
"We are making plenty of improvement and we are slowly reducing the mistakes and errors," said West, who only gets two evenings a week to work with his players, compared to the full week of preparation afforded to the more fortunate full-time outfits, of which Leeds are the biggest.
"Leeds are a very, very strong team and they will be favourites on Sunday.
"We look at it as another chance to keep improving. As long as the lads take on board what we do in training and continue to give 100 per cent effort then thats all I ask.
"But like any other match its a two horse race and you can never write anybody off."
