From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Acomb, York.

THE article by David Coates (Yorkshire Post, May 1) about "facts on the impact on immigration" is looking at the problem from a view that only
a small number of people are concerned about; namely the economic impact on individuals.
While this is relevant tomany low-paid workers, the impact caused by uncontrolled and unrestricted immigration into the UK since about 1955
is a far bigger issue and causes immense anger and frustration to the indigenous UK population, irrespective
of their wealth.

The simple truth is most of us would much prefer that it had not happened and can see very very few benefits of any kind.

Immigration has been a bad thing for this country because of the strains put on our infrastructure which was never designed to cope with these numbers on items like housing, schools, universities, transport, sewage dispersal, crime, road accidents, cleanliness, and social benefit claims.

Then there is the damage done to our culture, heritage, traditions, law enforcement, religion, jobs, training and way of life. A fortune is being spent to translate things into something like 140 different languages, English is not the first language of many primary school children, so teachers suffer, our own children are held back and all education suffers.

We were never consulted as to whether we wanted any or some of these people to enter Britain. Because of EU law and our regrettable membership of the EU, we cannot by law restrict the numbers coming to Britain and nor can we send any back.

Wherever I travel in the UK, no matter what the "economic standing" of my "audience", as I carefully lead up to the topic of immigration, something approaching 80 per cent are against it and love the chance to air their feelings and grievances to a sympathetic listener.

A recent BBC poll showed how many English people now "feel like a foreigner in their own country", and these people and many others are scathing in their attacks on our own folk who have allowed this situation to develop and get worse as each year goes by. These people are not racist – they just want their country back.

Why will no one in authority admit this, face the facts and accept that Enoch Powell was right?
