YOUR correspondent Duncan Anderson (Yorkshire Post, August 24) really does need to catch up with events and stop peddling "information" that is both out of date and factually incorrect. He also needs to read more than the news-sheets pushed through his letterbox by his local politicians and MP and listen to the words of some union leaders.
It really is about time that New Labour supporters who still believe that they are supporting a Labour Party woke up to the basic fact that they have been, and still are being, misled by a cynical band of career politicians who are about as Labour as
the Tory Party.

Has Mr Anderson forgotten that it was New Labour that broke virtually every election promise in not just one election manifesto; that its first leader abolished Clause Four; that one of its founders, Peter Mandelson, stated that New Labour was "extremely relaxed" about extremes of wealth; that the gap between the rich and the poor in this country has increased under New Labour? Does he know about the millions being made by private firms who are jumping on the PFI initiative? The list could go on and on.

What about Post Office and GP closures and the fact that many New Labour MPs voted to keep the John Lewis list to feather their own nests? Why is the taxpayer bailing out Northern Rock when other firms like Rover employing skilled workers have been allowed to go to the wall?

If Mr Anderson still believes that only the Tory Party is committed to market forces driving economic policy, he really should wake up and smell the coffee.

I am not a member of either the New Labour brigade of lost souls nor the smoothies in the Tory Party, just a one-time member of the real Labour Party. So let us at least face reality and accept what we have in British politics, namely two right-wing factions and one other, among whom the only "pretty straight guy" as Tony Blair called himself, is, I suggest, Vince Cable.
