This monstrous eco-town proposal is 'massively flawed'

From: Dr Glyn Powell, Bakersfield Drive, Kellington, near Goole.

FURTHER to your report (Yorkshire Post, May 9), I was astonished, but not surprised, that all the sites for the so-called eco-town were in the Selby area.
This is, no doubt, due to the fact that the MP John Grogan foolishly believes the Government lie that such towns are both ecologically and environmentally friendly and, would also help to overcome difficulties encountered by local working class peopl
e in finding affordable housing.

To John Grogan and the clowns in government at Whitehall – such towns would do nothing to either reduce the country's carbon footprint or help low-earners find affordable housing.

The eco-town policy, like all others pursued by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown in more than 10 years, is massively flawed. Also, when has this Government helped low earners – remember the abolition of the 10p tax band?

In conclusion, I would not wish to have such a town anywhere. However, I remain convinced that local officials/ councillors will recognise the absolute folly of siting such a monstrous development at Willow Green. This site is not brownfield and would pose congestion problems on local roads, including the M62. The local rail network is full to capacity and, in addition, flood risks to nearby villages would be greatly heightened.

The only beneficiary would be a rich landowner and his wealthy cronies.

This, unfortunately, is the extent then of John Grogan's
so-called "socialism". His party of class traitors should therefore get out of politics and hang their heads in shame at the damage they have done to this nation and its people.

From: Jackie Carlile, Hawthorn Garth, Kellington.

IN a recent speech made by Caroline Flint, the Housing Minister, she described eco-towns as being '"preserving green spaces and promoting recreation while cutting down the food miles needed by the local community".

So why hasn't the proposal for an eco-town at Kellington and Eggborough been outrightly rejected yet?

This proposal would replace fertile agricultural land and green belt with concrete.

More words from the Minister on the subject are "tackling climate change through housing".

Please explain how, exactly, does creating thousands more commuters on an already gridlocked motorway assist in tackling climate change, as this is the only viable route to employment centres?

I would ask the Minister to do the right thing for the environment, do the right thing for this local community.

Please show you are an MP with integrity, and not empty words, and reject this proposal now.

The Duke takes Sir Trevor for a ride

From: Terry Duncan, Greame Road, Bridlington.

I'D like to pass comment on the documentary The Duke, shown on ITV earlier this week, which mainly consisted of Sir Trevor McDonald voicing over a host of archive films about the husband of our gracious Queen Elizabeth.

I believe the Duke of Edinburgh was taking ITV's newsreader on a wild goose chase throughout the Sandringham Estate, and also taking the mickey out of him.

What we saw was Prince Phillip driving through all the mud he could find, blotting out the reporter's view of the estate.

And then we had a gaffe – not by by HRH, but from Sir Trevor, who could not tell a hen pheasant from a cock pheasant, only to be put right by Prince Phillip.

Great fun, but not a serious documentary.
